Lawrence Ferlinghetti: biografia

Nato a New York il 24 marzo 1919. Conosciuto soprattutto come proprietario della libreria e casa editrice City Lights, che pubblicò i primi lavori letterari della beat generation, tra cui Jack Kerouac e Allen Ginsberg. Ferlinghetti appartiene a una famiglia di immigranti italiani-portoghesi-sefarditi a Yonkers, nello stato di New York. Studiò alla Mount Hermon School e all'Università del Carolina del Nord sulla Chapel Hill, quindi si arruolò nella Marina statunitense durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Dopo la guerra, ottenne un diploma post-laurea all'Università della Columbia e un dottorato alla Sorbona. Quando studiava a Parigi, incontrò Kenneth Rexroth, che in seguito lo persuase a recarsi a San Francisco per sperimentare la nascente scena letteraria della città. Fra il 1951 e il 1953 insegnò francese, scrisse critica letteraria e dipinse. Finì in prigione per aver pubblicato "Howl", di Ginsberg, del 1956, condannato per oscenità.
