"
War Dust
Uranium in Beirut"
by Flaviano Masella, Angelo Saso, Maurizio Torrealta

ENRICHED URANIUM
HAS BEEN FOUND IN THE FUEL FILTER OF AN AMBULANCE IN
BEIRUT
After the analysis on some samples on the crater of Khiam,
the city in the south of Lebanon we spoke about in a
previous report by 24, mew investigations reveal the
presence of enriched uranium powders in Beirut .
This time, it is an analysis conducted on a fuel filter
of an ambulance in the southern part of the city. The
samples taken by two british researchers, Day Williams
and Cris Busby, and analysed by two different British
laboratories (among which the prestigious Harwell laboratory
used by the British Ministry of Defense) have confirmed
the presence of enriched uranium.
URANIUM HAS BEEN
FOUND ALSO IN ONE OF THE ANALYSED URINE SAMPLES
The British researcher Day Wiliams has also taken in
Beirut some urine samples from some people who worked
in the area hit by bombings. One of these samples has
shown the presence of uranium.
UNEP TOO FOUND URANIUM
IN ALL THE SITES THAT WERE EXAMINED BUT THEY CONSIDERED
THAT IT WAS NATURAL URANIUM
Also UNEP, the UN environmental Agency, has conducted
some analysis on samples taken from the crater in Khiam
and it found a concentration of uranium which was ten
times higher than the normal concentration. UNEP has
also analysed other 24 sites where it has found the presence
of uranium, but it considered it was natural uranium.
BOTH IN THEIR MOST
RADIOACTIVE FORM AND IN THEIR DEPLETED FORM URANIUM POWDERS
ARE HIGHLY TOXIC
Dust of enriched , natural or depleted uranium are highly
toxic if inhaled or ingested and the areas contaminated
by this substance are at high risk. The areas affected
are not far from the place where the Italian contingent
was operating in the South of Lebanon. Rainews24 has
collected the concerns of the Lebanese people who live
in the affected areas, has found the ambulance which
was contaminated, has interviewed the two British scientists
who collected and brought the radioactive samples to
the laboratories for the analysis, has interviewed the
Lebenese scientist who launched the alarm on radioactivity
in Khiam and has verified the status of the analysis
conducted by Unep.
